Norwood Families September 3, 2024
There are a few academic changes at Norwood this year that I would like to share with you. Students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade will be using the Being a Reader and Being Writer programs this year. All of our students will be utilizing the Big Idea math curriculum. Please be patient with our teachers, as they are working diligently to learn and implement these new programs.
There are also some updates to report cards for some of our students. Students in kindergarten through second grade will no longer have letter grades on their report cards. Instead of letter grades teachers will use a rubric that notes a student’s academic progress, work habits, and social-emotional skills. These changes are being made to hopefully provide each family with a better understanding of their child’s independent understanding of grade level academic standards.
New Oklahoma legislation has recently passed that changes reading and reading intervention for students in grade kindergarten through third grade. The Reading Sufficiency Act has been changed to the Strong Readers Act. Reading plans and intervention services for K-3 will continue for students that meet specific reading criteria. The reading plans will be referred to as a Student Literacy Intervention Plan. Parents will not be notified if their child scored at the “proficiency” level.
